What The Fuck Was I Thinking

(insert picture of signed CD I have that says “Casi Go Fuck Yourself or else Bitch” but I don’t have a camera at work)

When I first started to work in an office I always listened to music while I worked. Back in the day I used to stream online radio all day and download shit from soul seek. Then the tech dudes at my office caught me and sent an email to my boss and they shut down my internet port. So when we moved offices and they redid the computers they removed the audio card from my computer and I don’t even get to hear the Microsoft login noises and shit like that now. Which isn’t all that bad when you sneak into your desk at 9:45 on Wednesday after drinking all night and waking up in your hall way. I used to love our meetings at 10:00 in the morning when I would be getting yelled at the whole time with a stamp from the night before and my body reeking of smoke and my perspiration stinking like beer. It used to be the high light of the day when I finally sobered up enough at 1:00 to do some real work and fix all the shit I had fucked up that morning all hung over.

With so many mornings being all fucked up like this my musical interests at work have really started to change and I have rediscovered my affinity for folk music. Before I used to sit at work and listen to Juke and only listen to folk at home on the porch in my shade garden drinking organic wine but now I see its soothing pleasures while sitting in a 4x6 all day looking at computer screen wondering if the shit I do actually makes a difference in the world or in Philly. Soon my CD collection changed from loads of underground booty house/electro mixtapes, random indy rock promo CD’s, and straight fire backpack rap to Easy Listening bangers and Acoustic Folk battle breaks. (You can’t “clog” better then me, you can’t “clog” better then me. end note sadly there is no wiki on flogging which is basically this South Virginia style of clogging that is pretty dope to see live its a little quicker stylistically speaking since Southern Bluegrass got that two step heat.)

One of my most recent additions is this CD by Jenny Owens Young who blends country, folk, dirty lyrics, songs about fucking dudes and leaving them for her own personal pleasure, and all other types of craziness. She is playing tonight in Philly at the Tin Angel for $10 bucks and its gonna be the raddest show since she generally talks shit on the audience in between songs which is always a good look for an emerging folkstress singing in the city of brotherly love.

Go at 10:30 the show will be over by the time its 12:00 and you can show off your one speed to all the 30 something’s as they realize its going to be an hour and a half drive back to Doylestown.

Interview with Ian Meyer

Drink Moloko just posted an interview with Ian Meyer. You may know of Ian from his websites based at Crewcial.org, or you may know him as the partyographer for the Rub, White Tees (above), or as nerd nerd nerd. Ian's manifesto, if you will, mirrors mine when taking pictures at parties and my initial start in photography. All I need now is to stop dancing so I can bring out a digital SLR.

The Rub & A-Trak stop in Philly

The Rub & A-Trak passed through on Sunday on their Sunglasses is A Must Tour thanks to PaperStreet. The Walnut Room had an interesting crowd as half seemed to be there for the tour and the other half were there for their usual Sunday night martinis. Regardless, them dudes did their thing and real heads know the deal.

A-Trak, Cosmo and Ayres were already on when I got there. The setup they have is nothing short of amazing. They have "four turntables, four computers (three Serato & one Ableton), a loop pedal, three mixers and a sampler." The three of them were rocking the tables etc. doing live remixes.

A-Trak would then do a solo show demonstrating his skills that earned him a DMC World champion title at the age of 15. Next up were special guests Cuiziner and Orgasmic who performed a handful of songs. The beats were good, the performance was good, I just wish I knew French.

Back to the The Rub and A-Trak performing the rest of the night. Meanwhile Michael Mayo aka DJ Butch Mayo was there shooting footage for his upcoming documentary Philasophical chronicling the Philadelphia DJ scene. More on that in the future. Cosmo and Ayres ended up playing past 2, after the lights came on. They just kept dropping funky track after funky track.

I shot some video from the night, check it out here here. Pictures are here (with guest shots from Trigger)

Simplefly put up pictures here and clip of A-Trak doing his thing.

If that wasn't enough we have tour diaries from Ayres and A-Trak

And for good measure to make up for not posting this until days later Bonde do Role - Melo do tabaco (A-trak remix) direct from the much improved and updated Mad Decent website

Also check out this sampler from Cuiziner's mixtape

    Party and Bullshit

While some of us are underachievers, we have a simple goal that underlies all of 51:51. Quite simply its "Have More Fun". Its really quite easy. Add good music, lots of strangers, alcohol, friends, red bull, dancing and alcohol and shake together until the club closes. The BPP have this mix down to a science and so it elevates our game whenever we party with them.

The night started out like a typical Saturday as we pregamed with our friends brandy, red bull and vodka before heading out to Metro for the Popoff shack. When we arrived Finger on the Pulse were on the decks downstairs. FOTP are a trio of dj's from nyc with a crazy dance party in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Drink specials were in full effect with $3 lagers. We headed upstairs and Brendan and Jesone were on the decks with that Soultraveling vibe. Happy birthday to whoever's birthday it was. BPP rolls in and the party is officially started. Emynd, Bo Bliz and Deluxxx in the place while Elixir is focused on the mic. Deluxxx lets me know that the Snap or Die mixtape with Low Budget is almost done but is on hold as Low Bee tours Europe. The place is packed, a group of girls are giggling and dancing near the pole. Go ahead Seg, I see you. I run into Sara and she lets me know that I should pick up this months issue of The Fader as I make a cameo appearance in the Spank Rock article as the pictures are from his appearance in Phily. Its all about that party and bullshit. 1:30 and we still have another party to go to.

Fast forward to Transit as we arrive and security recognizes us as we roll up. Its the Rub with Ayres, Cosmo and Eleven on the main floor with four turntables and two laptops. Downstairs Joey Blanco from the Soultravelers has the baby making jams. The Rub had the motherfucking remix live and well with the party jams. Shortly after 2 the rest of the Metro crowd packs the place. Oh no, it looks like a member of BPP could be sidelined from playing but no. The BPP are professionals and play through the pain and kick game regardless. Dancing, lagers, pictures and shots are effortlessly mixed together as we party and bullshit. We have succeeded, our goals are deemed accomplished so we stumble home with help from Mr. G.

Check the slideshow for photographic evidence.

    UPDATE:
Jay Simplefly has pictures up as well from Sweatheart/VIP @ Khyber then the Rub @ Transit here

    The Gift of Music

Wow! I really hope you didn't miss last night. Paperstreet knows exactly what to do to throw a party. Great leaders surround themselves with great talent and that is exactly what they are doing right now. The Rub on 4 turntables, Spankrock and Amanda Blank and Phil Moore Brown rocked the main floor while Steven Bloodbath and Dan The Swede tore it up in the basement. So much fun and so needed with finals, hectic holidays and more. It was an oasis of sensory overload to drown out all the unnecessary noise.

Hollertronix started the weekend off right at the 700 Club on Thursday. Low Budget is there every Thursday with the hottest house party of the week. Low B had the place in a frenzy playing new tracks from his upcoming album. Diplo dropped by as well, with his new tracks while the whole place went crazy.

Friday may have been a bit ill advised.

Luckily, Saturday completely made up for it. We would consider trekking through rain and trance if every Saturday was this good. Phil Moore Brown opened up with their signature sound and had the crowd rocking.

Meanwhile, $2 beers are an excellent way to start the night.

Spankrock came on next and absolutely killed it with The Love Peace Project, booty dancers, bongo drummers, Darko and Devlin on the decks. Amanda Blank came out and blessed us with a couple tracks. Pasey Pase was there as well providing extra hype. This is definitely one show that is not to be missed. 2006 has huge things in store. Its a full on assault of beats, bass, bounce and booty. The Rub followed it up with their party rocking skills on four turntables. Meanwhile Steven Bloodbath and Dan the Swede were rocking the downstairs.

2006 is starting off correctly with a number of excellent parties with Cosmo, Pase Rock and Spankrock on the XXXplosive tour and this Simplefly party. Plus to get things started there are two new dance parties starting in the next week with Unicorns & Rainbows on Fridays and The Pop Off on Saturdays. With Low Budget, Cosmo, Brendan Bring em, Bloodbath, The Swede and more, there is a new destination for philly nightlife. Don't forget about Destroy Your Liver on Sundays either, an excellent way to celebrate the weekend with $10 open bar from 8 - 2 at the Khyber.

    Pleasuretronix

Pleasuretronix like whoa! Pleasuretown was rockin' again til 8 AM, this time with Josh Wink. Downstairs Cosmo, Low Budget and Ric Rock tore it down. On the main floor Ovum held it down with Wink, Okeef and more. Upstairs Steven Bloodbath and John Redden were killing it as expected. And now for the rest of the story...

This is what happens when you party 'til 8 AM

Partying until 8 AM puts you into a different realm. There are those nights when you get home and the birds have just started chirping and its not quite as dark as it has been. 8, however, is the next level. Its fully light out and normal people are just waking up, getting ready to go to church and start their days as they go about with their everyday lives. We however are just stepping out into the daylight trying to remember the whole night...

    Its the Rub!

Seriously, I need Pimp C to do the voiceover for this. Ayres and Cosmo killed it. J&J had me mesmerized and the Womb was everything you would expect it to be; dark, warm and inviting. The Rub in the sixth boro was where it was at tonight. I was taking pictures all night and when I finally took my last pic, I was ready to get ugly with the rest of them. I'm surprised I didn't throw my arm out of its socket and on to the dance floor. I'll be feeling it tomorrow, so if any nurses want to come and help a doc out, come see me. It was an absoulte zoo tonight, Kats gettin Freaky , Misfit and a Herd of Elephants stompin thru and Pippi Longstocking like you've always wanted to see before. Cosmo ended the night right with Nolia Clap and this was just a taste of whats to come tomorrow. Can't forget to say thanks Sara!

This was just the start. Mississippi Love at Tragos is where its at tonight. If you haven't come out in years, months or less than day, you have to come out to Tragos today. You got work tomorrow? Come out early, go in late on Monday or just take the damn day off! You don't have work tomorrow? Come out early anyways. Seriously, if you can't stay just drop your donation off. If you are staying (and I don't know why you wouldn't) $20 for a VIP table and 6 pack on ice never felt so classy. Partying for a good cause, never felt so good. Don't forget to bring out that extra dough as well for all the silent auctions. You know you'll want what they got and tonight the money goes to a good cause, so you can afford to spend some extra dough ;)

Then Monday Mylo will be tearing up Fluid. Wow, I can't believe it. I wish I didn't have to get up so early on Monday and Tuesday. I will post more details soon. Email us and we'll hit you off with the details if you're impatient.
