Thursday: Sole A Philly Sneaker Documentary Premier

This looks dope. Local film premiering this Thursday at the Arbol Cafe.
Sole is a documentary that takes an almost anthropological look into the underground world of sneaker culture in Philadelphia. This film is part of the WYBE series called Philadelphia Stories. A portion of it will air on PBS Affiliate WYBE in May as a part of their sixth season of the annual mini-series event. While sneakers serve may serve their functional or fashionable purposes for hundreds of millions, they also serve as a serious hobby and lifestyle for mavens the world over. Sneakers become not only a collector's item, but some would say that they are even part of a modern art movement. The film goes deep into this underground world by interviewing boutique owners as well as designers and store buyers in order to bring full perspective into this unique business. Sole brings the viewer inside their world for a truly entertaining and informative look into the multidimensional landscape that is sneaker culture. Follow Philadelphia's heavy sneaker hitters as well as everyday sneaker collectors to see what makes them so oddly passionate about this multi-billion dollar industry.

Sazz Vintage Opens in Olde City

So DailyCandy is a daily email featuring cool stuff for "an affluent, influential female audience." They have local editions all over and one just for Philly and I found this one to be funny.

Last time he went out with the boys, he got thrown out of the champagne room.

Next time he wants to check out some nice racks, send him to Sazz, the newly opened men’s vintage store housed in what used to be Sailor Jerry’s Old City digs. Owner Amanda Saslow’s been hawking vintage for years, but her stock was taking over her house, so she opened up shop.

Clothing from the ’40s to the ’70s will turn the most fashion phobic guys into cravat wearing dandies. He’ll definitely want to check out the embroidered Western shirts and rockabilly gear, and pick up some buckles and hats to round out his look. They also stock bathing suits and lightweight shirts that’ll have him set for summer.

The staff is friendly enough to make him a repeat customer.

And he won’t get in trouble for groping the goods.

Oh noes! 2008 Philly BBoy BBQ Cancelled

The 2008 Philly BBoy BBQ has been canceled due to too much vandalism.
We received some sad news earlier this week that the B-Boy BBQ is going on a short hiatus and will NOT be happening this year. So yes, it is canceled! Mainly due to the uncontrollable amounts of vandalism that was occurring in the playground and to the surrounding neighborhood area. We will keep you up to date about a new venue as soon as we & the organizers find one.

Hmm, so does that mean it was canceled due to graffiti?

Head over 215HipHop to see pictures from years past.

Arts Garage Opening June 1st

Woohoo. The Arts Garage is back at it starting June 1st. Just got this release from the director. Sadly, it won't be the same though. No more open bar parties, closing at 2 AM since they are in the process of getting a liquor license although they are attempting to get a permit to stay open late.
This is to advise everyone that The Arts Garage will resume bookings for post June 1, 2008 events. Events that were canceled during the shut-down may receive first preference, considering that new date(s) were submitted via email by Friday May 2nd. Before booking new events, it is imperative that we discuss new operational changes, some of which are mentioned below:

1. In addition to installing Sprinkler System, we have also applied for a Liquor License. We hope to have one in place by August 1st 2008 or sooner. In the interim, there can no longer be "open bar" parties. Events may be promoted as "BYOB". Promoters may provide complementary non-alcohol beverages, including cups, can sodas, and water.

2. Guests carrying drinks on wheels (coolers) and back packs will not be admitted. Management reserves the right to refuse admission to patrons carrying backpacks, coolers, and other bulk/large items. We also reserve management discretion to refuse admission when deemed necessary.

3. The addition of a Liquor License also suggests that we can only open until 2:00 a.m. We are continuing efforts to secure a 3:30 a.m. closing, but until then, the venue will close no later than 2:00 a.m., patrons must vacate the premises by 2:30 a.m.

Thank you for your time and consideration and for your continued support of The Arts Garage. Please help get the word out. Feel free to contact me at 215-806-1491 with specific questions or requests.

Tacconellis - An Insider's Guide to Ordering

Ah, Tacconellis. Forget showing up here and ordering a slice at 3 am or stumbling through your cheesesteak order by saying with instead of wit or god forbid anything but Souf Philly English. It also has been named one of the best pizza places in the US. takes us on a step by step process of ordering your dough and sitting through the terrible service for the holy grail of pizza.
2. Always over-order. My Aunt Diane is crazy: She reserves about one pie per person when making a reservation. But there is a method to her madness: You always come home with leftovers, and unlike some other pizzas, Tacconelli’s is the gift that keeps on giving... Besides, Tacconelli’s is like drugs: There’s nothing worse than running out before you feel like you’ve had enough. How to order at Tacconellis, Tacconellis Pizzeria

Official Arts Garage Statement

Direct from the Director of the Arts Garage

By now, some of you might have heard that The Arts Garage was shut down by the Department of License and inspection for code violations, including a requirement to install sprinkler system. The sprinkler system is a $50,000 expense and can take six to eight weeks to complete.

L & I made it clear that The Arts Garage will not be permitted to re-open until the violation is corrected. After careful consideration, it does not appear likely that The Arts Garage can reopen sooner than 90 days.

Promoters that which to host their events during this period can contact the following two North Philly venues for consideration.

1. Dowling Palace located at 1310 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130. Tel: 215-236-9888. Ask for Stacey.

2. The Guild located at 735 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19123. Tel: 215-989-9809. Ask for Bunmi Samuel.

I am committed to correct the violation ASAP and reopen when contingencies permits. My sincere gratitude to everyone that called to offer a pledge of support.

Executive Director

Ouch, not sure what this means for White Tees or any of the other awesome events planned for the next 3 months.

Throwback Jungle and Forward

Lets go way back into time with this one. Break out the glowsticks, PLUR, ROAR and all that. Remember Local 13 and their fruit parties, Evoloution, April Foolz, Skyline and the like. Have that fuzzy warm feeling? No idea what I'm talking about, it's all love.

First up tonight DJ Rap Reid Speed Annalyze is headlining 33Twenty with Swarm and Michael Myers. Its going to be ravealicious and I highly recommend you go to this. You should probably leave the glowsticks at home unless your bringing strings with them ;) Seriously though, Annalyze is a highly accomplished DJ and you should know about Swarm and Michael Myers.

As a bonus, I dug through my old collection and found a CD full of Myster Mason mixes from 99 - 01. Mason gave me this CD after dancing to A Side at the bar that is now Shouk like 5-6 years ago. Here is just a little treat. I'll keep peppering you with the mixes if you like them. Sorry no tracklisting.

Committee of Seventy: Volunteer on April 22nd

Time to volunteer for the Primary Election!
We are looking for volunteers for a very exciting Primary Election, for the Presidency and especially for the State Senate and Representative races. By volunteering just a few hours of your time, you can help safeguard the integrity of the election and ensure that all eligible citizens can freely exercise their right to VOTE! Please see below for details about volunteer opportunities for the April 22, 2008 Primary Election.

Volunteer Opportunities on Election Day:

Citizen Field Volunteer:

Work on a team of 2-3 members (including one driver) and will be assigned to a specific geographic area in Philadelphia. The team travels between polling places, monitoring activity, answering voters' questions, helping to settle minor disputes and directing more complicated problems to the proper authorities.

Office Volunteer:

Work in Seventy's office, answering calls from voters, poll officials and Seventy Volunteers. Office Volunteers will be helping voters find their polling places, giving basic assistance with Election Day rules, directing problems to the correct authorities, and documenting problems that will be responded to by field teams.

Legal Volunteer:

This opportunity is for legal professionals and law students. Legal team volunteers will work on a team of 2-3 members (including one driver) and will be assigned to back up Citizen Teams in a specific geographic area (3 - 4 wards) in Philadelphia. In addition to traveling between polling places monitoring activity, and answering voters' questions, Legal Teams are assigned to more complicated problems that may require the assistance of a legal professional.

All volunteers are required to attend a one-hour training session prior to Election Day. At training, volunteers will receive necessary materials and information for their assignment. We will begin scheduling trainings during the second week of March. Trainings will be held at our Center City office, unless otherwise noted. If you have a group of 15 or more people, we can schedule a time and location convenient to you!

For more information on these volunteer opportunities, or to register go to If you have any questions about these opportunities please call Nina Bloch at Committee of Seventy at (215) 557-3600, ext. 124 or e-mail at

EDITOR: "The Committee of Seventy is a non-partisan organization conducting a permanent campaign to improve the Philadelphia region by demanding ethical conduct of public officials, promoting government efficiency, educating citizens and safeguarding elections." The post previously had a picture of Barack Obama which implied that 70 supported Obama, in fact this candidate is supported by the poster and not the Committee.

Michelle McCoskey

Have you ever gotten bored with your H&M scarf and been like, "Damnit today I want to wear a squid as a scarf!". Well now you can thanks to Michelle McCoskey. Michelle is from Philly and one of her specialties is crocheting scarves. If you're not into squids and more into octopi or something completely different she will create a custom creature just for you. Need a suggestion? Do you like Firefox? I would totally get her to make one of these. Michelle is also quite skilled in painting and prints. This painting is totally going up on my wall.

A Kiss for Mayor Nutter

DesignPhiladelphia and the Fallon And Rosof Art Blog have teamed up to remind Michael Nutter to keep his promise of reestablishing the Office of Arts and Culture.

Here's the deal. We will create a series of photo posts on the blog called A Kiss for Mayor Nutter that will include images of artists and art lovers throughout the city. These images make the face of the "arts" constituency somehow more real than it seems when people talk about artists and the arts.

So, send us jpeg images of yourselves in the city, one per artist -- at Love Park, at a gallery, at the museums, the zoo, on Broad St....somewhere in Philly--you know you have these photos and we want em! Send medium resolution images (281 height x 375 width is the artblog standard size) with your name and the location of the picture. We will run these images in a stream under the heading "A Kiss for Mayor Nutter" in a continuing series of posts starting today.

Act now and send us your images (one per person, please). Email: libbyandroberta{at} gmail.

We are acting in collaboration with Kevin Derrick, of designphiladelphia blog, who proposed an image campaign to show the how Philadelphia artists love the city and love being artists here.

8 for '08 from the Inquirer

The Inquirer just released their Spring music announcing 8 in '08 to watch out for and it features some of our favorites on the list including the power couple above.
The YMD: set for the spring release of the hilarious Excuse Me, This Is the Yah Mos Def on Princeton's My Pal God records.
Santogold: Santogold, her self-titled debut, comes out in April.
Nouveau Riche: A new EP is due next month, and a full-length by year's end. They play Silk City, with TuPhace, on Feb. 12.
Diplo: putting the finishing touches on a Brazilian music movie called Favela on Blast that dazzles even as a work in progress. He's got a solo album coming with vocal tracks from artists as varied as Cat Power and rapper Bun B, and a reggae dancehall album with British DJ Switch. And, oh yeah, he's spinning on the MySpace tour as the opening act for Justice, at the Electric Factory March 10.
Spank Rock and Amanda Blank: both will have albums out on the Downtown label.
Philly is doing it real big in '08.

Armands is Closing For Real

Remember the last time we mentioned this? Apparently a little over a year ago. This time it is for really real. Sadly the upstairs music department is closing and the sale begins today.
Armand's Records Music Dept. which has been in business since 1980 is officially closing its 2nd Floor Dept. at 1108 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia. All Cds, Records, DVDS, Slipmats, Record Bags and all Accessories will be 25% - 75% Off.
Any DJ can tell you the loss of such a cornerstone in the market. This was the place to go for new music. Remember when the official release date was the official release date? You went to the store, saw a bunch of your DJ friends, hung out, fought for listening space and dropped your whole paycheck.

Read on for some reminiscing:

Dirty South Joe:
Hate it or love it, the Hollertronix Never Scared mixtape was a revelation to some and had an enormous influence on the global dj landscape. I remember one particular interview Mike did at the time when he attributed the eclecticism of the mix to the simple notion that walking around Armand's, that was the stuff you ran into, one genre after another. It wasn't exactly unique, plenty of stores carried a wide variety of music, but it was always up to the time, and basically a candy shop for the urban music based dj. Plus it was ENORMOUS, and the vinyl department dwarfed everything else. The first time I ever walked in there I came to the immediate and essential understanding that I had to work there. I had just moved to Philly from NY and the EVERYTHINGI'LLEVERNEEDINONERECORDSTORENESS of the place was the perfect antidote to the 17 record store rotation I was used to in my previous residence.

The roll call of Armand's employees who have made their mark on the game in recent years is formidable...Low-Bee, Cosmo Baker and Kenny Meez to name a few, the place had a way of leaving as much of its mark on you as you could possibly ever influence it yourself. That was probably because, during its heyday, it was INSANE with activity, and the place to go if you had any notion of staying one step ahead of the game. I was blessed. On my very first day, Jazzy Jeff and Ca$h Money kind of randomly bumped into each other moving through the aisles while I was within earshot putting records away. One had just gotten back from Japan and the other from Europe, and it was obvious they hadn't seen each other in a long time. What a great sign that I was in the right place at the right time! Jazzy Jeff and Ca$h Money!!!On my first day!
Cosmo Baker:
Damn, this kind of makes me teary. I think I can really say that this is the most appropriate place to say:

"The end of an era."

Rest In Peace Todd-1. If it weren't for him the store would not be what it became.

Respect to Yuri Dutton for streamlining the store in the 90s, helping solidify it's position as a place for independent vinyl

And MUCH respect for the love and guidance from Dirty South Joe who ushered the store into the next generation, and who singlehandedly kept the store alive, as well as using the store to become a champion for tons of musical talent.
Bo Bliz:
when a NEW HOT record would come out it would get a lot more rub than this huge amount of wmd's that somehow get into my hard drive. pretty crazy. more of an event.

and yeah, swinging into armands on a tuesday or before the weekend would be an amazing opportunity to talk shit bout records and really get down with folks. didn't appreciate it at the time, but damn!!!
Billy W:
When I lived in NY, we'd roll down to Philly to cop club records because at that time the Lab only had a small handful and weren't getting new ones the same way Armand's was. You'd go in there checking out five club records and leave with a grip of like 15-20 singles of all different types of sounds. That's what I look for in a record shop experience and Armand's always delivered in spades.
I will always remember these things about Armand's:

1. Dirty South Joe playing me countless new bangers.
2. Dirty South Joe convincing me to buy records that turned out to be club clunkers, but he was very persuasive.
3. Drinking behind the counter with Joe.
4. Layla and her accent.
5. Lloyd
6. Bmore Club records

Man, this sucks.
JT from
I also want to take this time to acknowledge all the hard work, support, and love the owners of this business has shown all of us. From the discounts to the secret record stashes they have always looked out for the average consumer to the superstar DJ. So if your a fellow record collector/supporter like myself I advise you get out of work early on Friday, and go down to Armands and get as much as you can.
Real talk. This is major. End of an era for sure.

Gillie Da Kid - Get Down on the Ground (video)

I love this track so much. I think its mostly the hook. Gillie's flow is nice though. All around banger. DJ's please play this if you play any rap music at all. What up Germantown? I see you. So is Gillie the King of Philly? Beanie doesn't want it. Cassidy asks "How is Gillie the King when he don't even have a single out? Gillie gets a little mad and runs up in Cassidys old neighborhood. Cassidy kills it in this King of Philly freestyle though (quality could be better though).

DJ Sega - Rockstars vs Clubheadz

Oh snap, it's here! Volume 2 in the 5151 Mix Series features DJ Sega with his mixtape Rockstars vs Clubheadz. The first half of the mix is all rockstar remixes like Bodies on the Floor, Last Resort, Party Like a Rockstar and more. The second half is all that club ish, like I Get Money, Money in the Bank, Buy You a Drink and more (full tracklisting). This is some next level ish. When I finally saw the front design I bugged out. You can't see it very well in the above pic, but blue Sonic the clubhead is wearing candy bracelets and has glowsticks (Get a better view here). So ill.

Since the streets are asking, I've set a handful aside that you can buy directly from me. They just went off to the distributor so they should be in stores real soon like. If you're in Philly, stop by Pedestrian and pick one up there. Otherwise, holla at me. Each of the first sent out will be $7 with $2 shipping to US & Canada only. Vaudevillains City Paper Cover Story

The Space 1026 Mummers collective, the Vaudevillains, are this week's City Paper cover story. Ryan Creed looks into how a bunch of art school kids invaded the ranks of the Mummers brigades.

"They're going to laugh at us! We're the Bad News Bears of the Mummers!"

The New Year's Day Mummers Parade is one of Philadelphia's oldest and most popular traditions, second only to Independence Day. Despite its size, familiarity with the parade is still largely confined to the Delaware Valley. Having roots dating before the Civil War, the parade was officially recognized by the city government in 1901, and its present-day incarnation still shares much with the past: Members of Mummers brigades (largely South Philadelphia men of European descent) wear flamboyant costumes and perform choreographed dances with a rowdy, public drunkenness akin to Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
The Vaudevillains will be marching 4th in line, starting at 8:45 from Broad and Washington and will be performing in front of City Hall. Be sure to catch them in person or on TV.

Avenue Q in Philly

Woohoo! Avenue Q is playing in Philly for two weeks at the Forrest Theater. A portion of the actors in Avenue Q are actually puppets, however, this is not the Muppet Show. The theater warns against bringing children under the age of 12 as the show deals with adult themes.
AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice...Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
For an idea of the type of musical Avenue Q is, watch "The Internet is for Porn" animated using Warcraft characters.

Avenue Q runs from January 29th to February 10th. Tickets range from 31.50 to 126.50 and can be purchased here. Read more about Avenue Q.

30 Foot Tall Dollar Bin Jams

This is so ridiculous its awesome.

Sexy Beau Bridges and Joy Harmon in Village Of The Giants a spoofy movie where a gang of juvenile delinquents ingest a substance and grow to 30 ft tall, then proceed to take over a small town. directed by Bert I. Gordon (based on a novel written by H.G. Wells) , music by Jack Nitzsche with an appearance by The Beau Brummels, choregraphy by Toni Basil. This track by Jack Nitzsche, called The Last Race, is also featured on Quentin Tarantino's last movie soundtrack : Death Proof 2007).
I swear 30 foot Joy Harmon wasn't the only reason I posted this.Dollar Bin Jams Where Are You? You're my only hope.
Speaking of Dollar Bin Jams, Mike T is opening up his own vintage record and clothing store where you too can buy dollar bin jams. SweetJane will be located at 1724 E. Passyunk. Opening reception is this Friday from 7 - 10 PM and includes complimentary spirits and sound waves from Shawn Ryan, Billy W and Kyle [M]. Look a flyer.

Doin It Well Calendar

Art can always compensate for, how do you say, uh risque images. Take for example Loose, in the future there will be term papers written about the social significance of Bangers and Cash. Meanwhile, fellow Philly artists have compiled an artistic calendar fit for friends, brothers and side jawns alike. Enter the Doing It Well 12 Month Calendar:
Recipients will be able to savor that holiday magic year round with twelve full color 9x9 glossy illustrations of everyone's biggest fantasies. Acts made popular by internet creeps and urban legend are brought to life in fantastic illustrations inspired by The Angry Pirate, The Donkey Punch, and everyone's favorite, Dog in a Bathtub [plus 9 more!].
Sadly 2 Girls 1 (insert finale here) was too much of a late phenomenon to make it, but hopefully next year. Order Doing it Well for less than the cost of a cab ride and cheap bottle of wine ($12) from Bent Stationery.

IAMISEE is Philly based MC I slept on at first but something inside me drug me to peep his new song "Danger Stranger." His flow and voice are a cross between MF Doom and Aesop Rock with some throwback MC Hammer stylings. Ok not so much on the MC Hammer. Shit is still fire.

Phileb Choice

  • Philebrity.TV relaunched today. Its snazzy and the player at the top of the page plays episodes consecutively like a real TV would. They also have commercials like real TV does too. Woohoo!
  • Citypaper Choice Awards have been announced. You can read all about them, preferably in print cause I'm hoping they make more sense there. I personally linked these two together to highlight the ongoing tiff between Brian Hickey and Joey Sweeney. See Phileb's side here and Brian Hickey's stab here. Oh I think I get it now, there is the clever make up awards for people narrative section then there is the actual listing where the awards make sense.
  • Citypaper Choice winner Damon Abnormal deserves his own section and link. Follow him along on Flickr as he dominates street art popping up everywhere, most notably in recent months with the pink soldiers and the stickmen on the street. See a sticker and want to know the name? Damon knows and saw it two weeks ago.

So Philly

>>>A historical plaque was installed in the Italian Market section of Philly commemorating the "South 9th Street Curb Market", whatever that is. Apparently last night "the plaque portion at the top was unbolted, apparently thrown to the ground - and may have been run over by a car". I have to say this is pretty awesome. Stop renaming streets and sections of the city. We DO NOT WANT. Its the Italian Market regardless of anything else. Its Delaware Ave not Chris Columbus.

>>>Wow! Years and years after Philly was supposed to have a Public Access channel, there finally is one. Not that everyone doesn't already have a million options instead of traditional TV. The current estimates are that it will be live in January 2008 and are currently looking for content. Submit your videos to

>>>Joe Sixpack posted his second reason why Philly is the best beer drinking city. It has to do with 10% and Dogfish.

>>>More beer news from Joe Sixpack, Standard Tap is tapping a new cask ale every Wednesday, taking Halloween off but back November 7th with a Yards Ale.

>>>With 0 votes tallied and 0% of precinct reporting Philly Will Do is calling the Mayoral race over 12 days before it begins.

I love beer. I'm especially glad to live in Philly where most places have Yuengling priced the same as the other big pisswaters domestics. Even better than Yuengling is all of the wonderful beer bars like Eulogy, Monks, Nodding Head, Independence, Triumph, Ten Stone and so many others. There are also the awesome beer take out stores with the Foodery and the Wurst Best House at the top of the heap.
  • It is no surprise then that Philly area breweries received 16 Gold Medals at the latest Great American Beer Fest in Denver.
  • Just announced Philly Beer Week, March 7 - 16 in "America's best beer-drinking city"

Switch, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Sega, Josh Wink

Yo, fuck real life for real. I want to be lawnmower man during the day and then magically appear at night at whatever club night that is the best that night. Like this night, in fact this whole day. I have some real world ish to handle all this week and have no idea how much internets I am going to have access to. This means that I'm missing out on all of Wednesday and won't be posting much. Wednesday would have been an all around awesome day. Early morning, I got the daytime grind on lock with some important interesting ish, get out at a mad decent time and then restaurant week reservations at Brasserie Perrier, for two, with a hopeful good look, course I'm not sure about that whole situation anymore. Then, nighttime jumpoff with Switchlo aka Lilo and Stitch aka Switch and Diplo which, if you were lucky, saw kill it pre tour at [Click] at Fluid. Not to mention rockstar (shorty we are rockstars) Blaqstarr and the "hipster premiere of DJ Sega". Sega is the truth. By hipster premiere, they mean, have you been to Jamz on a Friday or Pinnacle on a Sunday? This is an all ages jump off, so I bet some of you have. I got to see the young bol DJ in an intimate setting last week (Happy bday DSJ and Jawntronix) and he absolutely killed while playing all of his own trax. I'm not salty in the least bit. Not at all...
More info at

And just to add insult to injury, Josh Wink celebrates 10 years of Ovum last Wednesdays at Fluid. If you're more into "traditional" house as opposed to Baltimore house, then you need to be here. Two complete opposite ends of the spectrum. I don't even want to write anymore about this or find that Wink music video where the boombox becomes a big star.
Wink guestlist which is free entry until 12.

Like I said, Not. Salty. At. All. In. The Least. Definitely didn't want to crazy leg wit it to Blaqstarr or Wu Tang to Sega. Nope, not me.

Secret Service Confiscates Art Installation

Be careful who you add on MySpace as the proprietors of Bobo's art gallery in South Philadelphia found out.
The window... complete with one-sided photocopies of dollars in numerous denominations. One afternoon the window drew an inquiry from a gentleman who "wished to purchase the piece", the proprietors of Bobo's thought this was odd but made an appointment with the gentleman anyways.
On the appointed day the gentleman was back with no less then eight other gentlemen, members of the secret service, who told Drew, Nick, and Phil to put their hands in the air. The secret service men came bearing files, thick with photocopies from each of the artist's myspace pages. The window display was confiscated.

The rest of the gallery is still intact so be sure to check Bobo's out at 1134 South 9th Street.
