DJ Dirty - Sundae Shakedown Yacht Party Mix (live)

Oh snap, house music all night long! I guess in this case all day long because DJ Dirty just hit me off with a mix from the Sundae Shakedown WMC Yacht Party. Sundae partnered with Shakedown for a yacht party down at WMC this year...Ok I'm just jealous and I can't really write anything more praising how cool it might have been cause I wasn't there. :( Just download the mix and book your plane tickets for Miami now before gas prices make you walk there because thats the only affordable option. I'm not mad. I swear. Expect soulful, funky, party on a boat house. Make some mojitos or caipirinhas and just chill. Use the grill, its nice outside. Invite some friends over. I'm having a BBQ real soon, I've got venison burgers. We're doing it real big this weekend. Holler at me.

"For your hipster flavor and house fresh smell, make sure you count on Dirty every time"
DJ Dirty plays every Sundae and monthly at 4 AM.

Bo Bliz & Emynd representing in Bmore Friday

Yeah I know this place is all about Philly but if you are an in the know reader you know we represent for Baltimore any chance we get. So the Bol Bliz and the Re Emynd eR are heading south to the land cradle of Club Music civilzation. Check the City Paper out of Bmore wrting up these dudes.

Shouts out to Senari who is doing her booking thing and promoting tracks. Its kinda crazy how promoting is pretty much all myspace now but I did see some flyers for this in all the cool spots (even at Unruly Headquaters). I wonder who be working the street team for your shit. Reguardless YGG and yeah kitten crew or what ever that bullshit is.

Check the tracklisting for the new Bo Bliz & Emynd mix tapes over at Crossfaded Bacon Blog. Download them below.

Saturday: Making Time

Guess who's not playing at Making Time again? Thats right its Crystal Castles! Thankfully they're on tour with Health, so unless a bottle of Jack keeps them down they'll definitely be there and if nothing else Switch is there to drop that dirty jackin fidget house. Oh yeah, I heard a rumor while at SXSW, apparently the real reason Ethan from Crystal Castles is so secretive about his name is that he was in a band that we would make fun of him for. Hmm, maybe glam rock? 80's hair band? Goth death metal? Nu metal? I betcha it was nu metal, easier transition to nu rave.

As a little bonus, I got this in the mail. A little mix from JAPATTACK.
Tracklist:
crystal castles - courtship dating
crystal castles - air war (cfcf remix)
letter g - it's gone
the bloody beetroots - we are from venice (la serenissima)
crookers- massive
the bloody beetroots feat congorock - bluto fucks popeye
esau mwamwaya - chalo
JAPATTACK - my bike in c minor
abx - i rhymed slow in 1991
genghis tron - arms (dylan reece remix)

Cosmo Baker - Too Much Posse

Cosmo Baker has just released another incredible mixtape. This 2 hour plus mix is dedicated to the posse cut that used to appear on every rap album.
This was the record where the artist would invite some of his boys to drop verses on a song, and the end result usually ended up sounding like teh best rap party that ever. Sometimes it was a crazy combination of rappers that you would never think would even bless the same city, much less the mic. Sometimes it would end up being the jump start to a legendary career. Whatever it would be, the posse cut always brought the fire.

Here is a collection of some of my favorite posse cuts of all time. The initial list I had was much longer but in the end I had to trim it down. I had to make sure that (for the most part) the entire song played on this mix - I didn't want to leave anyone out. So here it is - let's go!

Throwback Jungle and Forward

Lets go way back into time with this one. Break out the glowsticks, PLUR, ROAR and all that. Remember Local 13 and their fruit parties, Evoloution, April Foolz, Skyline and the like. Have that fuzzy warm feeling? No idea what I'm talking about, it's all love.

First up tonight DJ Rap Reid Speed Annalyze is headlining 33Twenty with Swarm and Michael Myers. Its going to be ravealicious and I highly recommend you go to this. You should probably leave the glowsticks at home unless your bringing strings with them ;) Seriously though, Annalyze is a highly accomplished DJ and you should know about Swarm and Michael Myers.

As a bonus, I dug through my old collection and found a CD full of Myster Mason mixes from 99 - 01. Mason gave me this CD after dancing to A Side at the bar that is now Shouk like 5-6 years ago. Here is just a little treat. I'll keep peppering you with the mixes if you like them. Sorry no tracklisting.

Got this tribute mix from Cool Hand Lex in the mail.
I wanted to hit you with this Pimp C tribute I mixed live earlier this week. The song selections are based off my favorite Pimp verses. I saved the tricks for other mixes; this is just a sampling of Texas flavor from the late pioneer. Check out the end where I edited some interview snippets that I think really capture what the dude was about.

New FACT MAGAZINE OUT TODAY

dbt dbt dbt dbt dbt dun dun dun dun dun dun ddun air horn vocal burbr brurbrburbur

This is like the new type of music I am into. I have no idea what its called but I know its not dubstep. Basically its like that hybrid shit 4x4 and like speed garage and shit. I first got into from listening to Trouble and Basssss mixtapes and hearing Drop the Lime dj out and drop these nasty little gems. Then it was further solidified listening to the Dubsided camps bass lines that Herve, Switch and Sinden be droppin. Then I heard Todosantos and shit just floored me since they was using elements of this but in a new way. Then like a month ago I was told by a member of Todosantos that this genre is called Nichestep or some shit like that and I am totally into it. Todays mix I have been jammin all day is from these dudes Fagatronix that I grabbed out of Fact Magazine. Shit is nice and slammin. Fagatronix sound like some myspace dj crew of whateverness and this mix smacks of a bedroom and ableton live but I am totally feeling it.Added bonus they drop a Dwizz track...

Since your already over at Fact you might as well take a read of Sindens year wrap up of shit he is feeling. The article is dope highlighting a lot of my favorite people killing it in the game right now also, Buraka, Dude and Nem, Trouble and Bass etc just go read it.

Side note to Fagatronix you should read Catchdubs article in the new Fader about The New Dj Culture. You can download it from Itunes.

Mix Tape Month Ghettotek Mixing With Detriots Dj Surgeon

Missed a week so you might see two posts like whoa whoa whoa whoa...

So like earlier this year I went to this warehouse party off of Delaware avenue and was like totally totally faded. Dev79 and Stumbul where spinning all night and shit was pretty ghettotechtastically tastical. Anywho this party is like the shit. Straight up muterhfuckers are to drugged out and banged up to do anything but stand in place and "dance" more like flap back and forth. This is another night that I had my camera and was taking all types of crazy pictures hopefully Di1 will post the ones he didn't put up on Flicker that make that place a reality. We found this high heel shoe in the middle of the road and was taking pictures with it all night. I think their was even a time when I had a beer in the shoe as cushie and was drinking out of it.

So the main reason I was at this party till like 4:30 in the A.M. doing thangs in the bathroom with that girl who told me she wanted to dj like Hollertronix just with out the Crunk since thats corny (yeah she basically missed the whole point of hollertronix) was to see Detriots own Dj Surgeon. This dude is just an underground force in the ghettotek scene. Dudes style is just straight hard ghettotek shit. Best part is that he keeps it really old school by keeping his records bpm'd at around 135 so when you DJ his shit you have to push it up to like 145 and you keep that hot ass speed up vocals and drums sound. Just reminds me of days when I first found out about ghetto house and speeding up records to the upper 140's instead of a lot of the tracks coming out now that start at 140.

So this is some rare ass CD I got from dude called Ghetto Tech Mixin Phase 5 Beyond Ghetto. Now what makes this mix interesting is that he does pull away from the more technoy aspect that he is know for. In this mix you are gonna get a lot of the midwest classics from Funk, Godfather and some special Surgeon blends but thats not the best part. So its kinda like that Atrack CD, lots of hip hop accepellas over ghettotech tracks and other reworks, he also has this really funny breakdown to all the sucker ass Dj's who can't scratch over fast records. Reminds me of the days of ISP and when Magic Mike was putting out booty records on Mo Wax with scracths over them already, not really sure how people dance to this but I guess its for all the dudes in the warehouse at 5 am. Plus this record you get to hear how ghettotech dj's spin Baltimore club. These dudes just push the bar up to like 140 to 145 making Bmore go right back to its roots in breakbeat hardcore. Shit is fucking nasty. Its just a whole new way to interpret those records. I mean I am all into doing crazy shit with djing but I don't think I could ever push Bmore records up that high. Surgeon drops Rod Lee's Dance My Pain Away and it almost sounds like Rod Lee is to fat and out of breath trying to keep on beat and he has to go shoot Emily Rabitt in the butt after she picks him up from his house to drive him to the studio even though she stopped booking for him.

Extra Bonus Databass 062 Boss Up Ep of three year old hip tracks ghettoteked out.

Send me an email to get this.

Editor: Send an email with "5 AM OR trip" to 5151List [at] gmail to receive this mix. See pics from that night here. My personal favorite of the set.

November is Mix Tape Month

Basically I get all these freakin mix tapes sent to me and shit and I listen to them at work. Then when this drawer gets full I pull everything out go down the street sell what I can and toss the rest and wait for the drawer to fill again. So I thought today fuck it might as well give some of this shit away. So lets dig deep and go into the drawer and find some shit. So send me an email if you want this fucking CD before I sell it.

First week lets do the Diplo and Tripledouble AEIOU 2 (in color) mix tape repress jump off from TTL. Crazy story about this mix tape right. It came out right as Favela on Blast and Florida but I never picked this one up. I wanted to buy the Hollertronix T-shirt but instead got Favela on Blast which was a horrible move since that shit is like all over the internet right. Whatevs.

So like when this tape first dropped in 2005 I went to this fund raiser for the Prometheus’s Radio Project in the basement of the church they rent out on 50th and Baltimore in West Philly. So I am supposed to DJ just to keep the mood so I am playing some straight underground hip hop heat. Tons of Pete Rock souled out shit, lots of Detroit shit with Dilla on the boards and then that down tempo heat. Then finally some one else is ready to DJ so for my last record I pull out the white label Diplo Rhythm record I had and threw it on. Then this dude over in the corner teaching kids about nutrition jumps up runs over and starts freaking dancing around, mind you there was no one dancing before him. He then turns to me and was like “I was just in Stockholm with Diplo playing this gig. Shit was insane.” Turns out Tony Tripledouble teaches kids nutrition in public schools with a grant from Penn and was at the event. He gave me a CDR of this mix that day, nice dude. I think he still runs Small Time Hustle and talks lots of shit up on Soul Travelers board.

So I didn’t think about this mix till like 2 years later I was driving with my boy Luke from Chicago to New Orleans all through the night right. So of course we leave late since Luke wants to go see Yo La Tango which is really out of control then with in the first hour of driving he says I am mad tired and need to go to bed. WTF right… So we ended up on route 66 forever and it was crazy to see the cotton on the side of the rode and shit like that. But for a while in the middle of the night we were both really tired so we were trading off sleeping an hour and driving an hour. So I go to bed and then a little bit later I get woken up by Luke straight freestlyin over some beats. When I mean freestlyin I mean dude is just going all over the place rapping about me sleeping and how the cars are driving past and its all off beat and crazy. So I sit up and am like what the fuck Luke, he doesn’t stop rappin and just starts to have a conversation with me rappin. It was totally annoying. Then I realize he is rapping along to AEIOU 2. It didn’t change how I felt about the situation.

DJ Andy Smith Monday October 15th

Next Monday Cosmo Baker is back in the building with DJ Excel, MC Lix and special guest Andy Smith. You may know Andy Smith with his better known group Portishead. From his bio:
Andy Smith was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets back in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more
To better acquaint you with Smith's style I'll be posting mixes so you can hear for yourself. This will surely be a night not to be missed if you are a fan of Shadow, Yoda, Food, Z Trip or the turntable as an instrument.
Oh and the best part? No cover all night as long as you sign up on the guestlist. I would suggest signing up sooner rather than later though as the list will be capped early.

DJ Funk on Saturday

Before Baltimore Club killed it for me in the clubs there was Ghetto House also known as Juke or Booty House from Chicago and Ghettotech from Detroit. (Ghetto House and Booty House are both all encompassing names for a number of different sub genres of music while Juke is specifically from Chicago and Ghettotech is specifically from Detroit.) Names like DJ Funk, DJ Assault, DJ Godfather and Slugo were banging that 130 BPM + music. There were so many classics that I would bug out to if I heard in the club. It was fast, it was bass heavy and the songs were raw. DJ Funk was one of my favorite DJ's and if he was playing I would be there. Songs like "Sex on the beach", "Playa Haters in Dis House", "Face Down", "Booty Bounce", "Let me bang", "Pump It" and so many more classics. There were so many because the DJ's would run them for maybe 2 minutes a piece if that. Watching them spin was a workout because they would constantly be changing records. Cue it up, mix, switch and repeat for 2 hours. Check the interview below for a history of Ghetto House, including how the name came about, and interviews with Funk, Waxmaster and more.

Now you can see DJ Funk on Ed Banger remixing Justice and so many more. Here is a 20 minute mix from 1999.
You can see DJ Funk live with many more this weekend at Whistle at Shampoo. Buy tickets online from Local13.com or from 611 at 611 South 4th Street.

Tonite: Planet of the Drums: Platinum Reunion

Incredible. Planet of the Drums is back for a special Platinum reunion. Dieselboy's Platinum night at Fluid (613 S. 4th) every Thursday was one of the premiere places to hear new drum n bass and jungle in the US. Every week a prominent producer or DJ would take the decks to a packed house. Resident DJ's Sine and Icon held down warmup duties while Dieselboy was away touring the world. Relive just a little bit of the magic tonite with AK1200, Dara, Dieselboy and J Messinian along with Kaos, Sine, Sharpness and Illy.

So I dug in the crates and found some old school and new school sets from Dieselboy and Dara.

Here is a cassette rip of Killa Sound from 1995. Houstonbeats has the tracklist
I briefly mentioned Sutpen's Jungle yesterday but it was the biggest jungle/dnb full party there was in the city, the East Coast and possibly all of the US. For years it was in a DIY warehouse called the Fake House in West Philly. In 2000, Substitution moved it to the Electric Factory. I used to have the flyer and might still somewhere. The lineup was incredible. Anyways here is a live set from Dieselboy
Last but not least is a newer set from Dslboy in January of 2007

Claude VonStroke - July 2006 Promo Mix and club history

I've dug up yet another Claude VonStroke mix. This one comes from July 2006, a bit old but I can't tell since I don't recognize most of the tracks. Its still banging though. Pick up tracks from VonStroke and others on his DirtyBird records from Beatport. Also, there is this party at this place that I may have mentioned once or twice.

Honestly I'm just excited that Fluid is 10 years old. Thats an eternity in club life. I've been going through clubs in my head and can't think of one that has been open the same amount of time. Transit is close but that nearly closed I don't know how many times. Places like Lounge 125 have gone through 4 or 5 incarnations at least in the past 10 years. SoMa use to be a cool spot for dancing but that was converted to Bar Named Sue then shut down. Medusa has been around for ~3 years and before that was a jazz club. Sals has been booking dj's for 1 - 2 years. 700 club has probably been open quite awhile but they never bring in outside talent. Pure used to be huge but under a different name. Skyline and 1516? (I think) used to kill it in Chinatown but have both been closed and leveled since like 98,99. Evolution on Delaware Ave. was big for awhile but is closed. There was Space but that only lasted a few years until it turned into Motion which lasted even shorter and is now vacant. M Room took over where Aqua Lounge left off. Shampoo I think is the only club still open and they've fell off. They barely bring in any big talent any more except if there is a Whistle there. Where else is there? Am I missing something on Delaware Avenue? I'm pretty sure most of those clubs have gone under an overhaul within the last 5 years. Whats your favorite place to listen to dance music now or in the past 10 years? Leave it in the comments.

Nate Day - Space People Space Disco

What up party people? Just got this new banging blog house / electro space disco mix for space people. I was going to write this long bio trying to peace together Nate Day's DJ career over the past 6 years in my head but then I noticed he wrote his own bio so I'm just going to copy and paste pieces.

I started djing about 6 years ago in my parents laundry room with no monitors just headphones. From there my friend Jay Simplefly gave me my first opportunity to play in front of a sold out Philadelphia crowd in January of 2002 after only djing for about a year, I rocked it soooo hard! A few months later I had my first residency at the greatest club on earth, the Parkway diner for the Subcode weekly.
Nate Day and friends started Rowdy at Medusa which developed into..."the most out of hand, beer flying, roof pounding, sweaty dancing, drum and bass party I have ever been a part of or been to for that matter...In late 06 I had the chance to hone my non dnb skills by playing to a very diverse crowd at the Sunday is the New Black party hosted by PaperStreet and Simplefly...Life was good but I decided I would like to really dig deep into music production and engineering and work on my tan, by moving to LA for Recording School"

So without further ado: Download Nate Day - Space People Space Disco

Tracklist
1. Intro- Nate Day and Jimi Hendrix

DJ Benzi & Lil Wayne - None Higher

Ok, attempt 2. I had a post here before with the download link and all that. Blogger seems to have ate it though. So, None Higher is a special edition of the the We Got The Remix series from DJ Benzi and the Evil Empire. Last year saw the Clipse mixtape and it was pure fiyah! This year sees Weezy F. Baby, the self proclaimed greatest rapper alive. There is alot of talk about he might could be and some of his guest appearances provide solid evidence. I'm still a little mad at him for throwing Drama under the bus but this mix proves why he could be the greatest. Check the tracklist below, producers include Neptunes, Diplo, Curtis Vodka, Catchdubs, David Banner, Timbaland and more.

From Benzi:
its one big mp3 and the promo version but its very listenable..

reallllly soon the 12" will be out and features great remixes from Mr J Patt, Hipplo, & Ghis Poirer. Cop that shit as a collectors item..
Turntable Lab should be the he first to have it..

DJ Lion - Ragga / Hip Hop Jungle Mixtape

With all of this neu rave floating around, I've been missing old rave music. One of my favorite genres was jungle / drum n bass, particularly jump up, ragga and hip hop remixes. A friend of mine had a mixtape (actual cassette tape) from DJ Lion that blew my mind. It easily was our favorite mix, sadly it was so good we believe a friend homesteaded it and it was forever lost. Thankfully to the power of the Internets and MySpace I tracked down DJ Lion and he was able to digitize the mix. So I offer it up to you. Its 90 minutes long, with Side A and the first 45 minutes dedicated to all ragga and the second 45 minutes on Side B dedicated to all hip hop remixes. Sorry no tracklisting. I believe this is from mid to late 90's.

DJ Soul - Assorted Donuts

Brand new J Dilla tribute mix featuring all Dilla all the time. 20 tracks of nothing but killer Dilla tracks. Far and away, my favorites are the two Ghostface tracks. He was made for those beats. (Whip Me With A Strap was originally called "One for Ghost" on the Donuts album.) Course picking your favorites on this album is like picking favorites when you have kids.

Download DJ Soul - Assorted Donuts. (Tracklisting)

Bonus: J Dilla - The $ (Madlib Remix) taken from "Hella International" 3/12-inch Box Set.
Limited edition quantities to be sold online after Stones Throw presents Hella International. Its cool, only one more reason why I'm jealous that I'm not in Miami.

Double L & El Professor Present Home for Carnival 2

Double L & El Professor are back again with Home for Carnival 2. They've upped the ante from Home for Carnival with over 50 of the hottest soca tracks this time.
From El Professor:
If you scored the first one and you think you know what to expect- you have no idea what you are in for and basically how bananas #2 in the series is. The first jawn SOLD OUT at MixtapeOne.com, Turntable Lab, as well as a number of online web sites. Six months later our first mix is still alive and well, as it is currently being bootlegged on eBay and in Japan and Australia and doing business in other countries not in the Western Hemisphere.

Given that Soca is a very annualized sound, Double L and I put this mix together AGAIN to represent the best of Soca over the past few years. Nothing less than the biggest tunes here- right up up up to di time. If you don't know much about it, and are looking to get into Soca- this is a great time to get up on some game with a tight mix (for cheap!).

    My Love

If I wrote you a symphony...Call me candle guy cause I am on fire.
Way too much Justin Timberlake. I never thought I would find myself liking Justin Timberlake so much. For all the ladies that don't have dates on this Valentines and wish they did, just close your eyes and listen to My Love.
I'm not big on Valentine's Day, the over commercialization of one of the most beautiful essences of existence. Treat your partner like everyday is Valentine's day and let them know they're loved everyday.
Meanwhile, I'm sitting here all sentimental at relationships gone by. My first love, my current love is music. She has always been there for me and always will be. She comforts me, keeps me warm and keeps me going. Without her I don't think I would be here.
    So without further ado:
Don't forget about The Love Movement - Art collective formerly based in Philly.

UPDATE: Thanks to Justin for pointing out that the last threee links didn't work, they do now.
Two links I forgot to mention but wanted to (well 3)

    October Monthly Mix Winner

The Low Budget monthly mix winner is Cousin Cole. Back again with a killer mix this time highlighting Marley Marl.

Marlon Williams (born September 30, 1962 in Queens, New York City), better known as Marley Marl, is an influential hip-hop producer. He was the house producer of the Juice Crew, which included (in addition to him): Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shanté, Kool G Rap, MC Shan (his cousin) and Masta Ace, and produced songs for outside artists including King Tee and LL Cool J. He was also an important figure in the careers of Eric B. & Rakim, producing their first hits "My Melody" and "Eric B Is President", mixing James Brown samples and synthetic beats in a fashion previously unheard of. Marley Marl was one of the pioneers of sampling in hip-hop. He debuted as an electro producer, but his records became more sample heavy, as can be seen by comparing the MC Shan LPs Down By Law (1987) and Born to be Wild (1988). The rhythms became less electronic, with drum machines becoming less prominent. Marl started his career working for Tuff City records. He debuted with his own track called "DJ Cuttin" in 1985, released under the pseudonym NYC Cutter. In 1994 Marley Marl was referenced on Biggie Smalls' track "Juicy" as being one of his early influences.

    Tracklisting:
    Def Fresh Crew intro
    Terminators - Forever Dis
    MC Shan - Beat Biter
    Steady B - I Took Your Radio
    MC Shan - MC Space
    Craig G - Shout

    Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - It's a Demo
Superkids - Live at Hip Hop USA (over Spoonie Gee - Take it off beat)
    Eric B & Rakim - Eric B is President
Big Daddy Kane - Get into it
Big Daddy Kane - Long live the Kane
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Road to the Riches
