Curtis Vodka - Diamonds & Cream

Just in time for the new Bond film our man System D128 has released the video for Curtis Vodka's Diamonds & Cream from the Yeti Bounce EP which is still available at fine record stores all over the world. Find out where here. If I ever have bodyguards they are definitely going to be like the girls (garotas*) at the end or maybe two from the Fox Force Five.

*I can't get Portuguese out of my head. Its weird to hear everybody speakinging in English. Walking into a store this morning I started going over what I was going to say and then realized I didn't need to speak in Portuguese or Spanish.

RE:UP 12 Out Now

RE:UP 12 is now out featuring a number killer articles including our boy Curtis Vodka. The feature spread is about ego trip "the last word in independent hip hop publishing" from their humble beginnings as a zine to their foray into TV with VH1.

Thomas and Eric of Rub N Tug, Stones Throwers Aloe Blacc and Exile, Eric San (the Canadian scratch musician better known as Kid Koala), DJ Shadow, Chromeo's Dave 1 (aka A-Trak's broham), and cut and paste dance wizards In Flagranti. Also has a nice little profile section on up and coming artists like Curtis Vodka, Aaron LaCrate, Escort and then some. Did I mention the design and art in this issue? From coverage of cute meisters Friends With You, spreads by Dave Kinsey and Grotesk, to throwback reggae covers and hand made signs from Latin America.
The magazine is packed with a ton of info. Pick it up directly from RE:UP or over at Turntable Lab.

Pop Montreal

Montreal was crazy. Shout out to the city and all the people I met and saw. Curtis Vodka and I stopped by L'Étiquette Radio on Friday night after getting into the city. From there we headed Fractal. Fractal is a two level warehouse club that was just reopened. Curtis played from 1 - 2:30 with his signature sound of Baltimore club. Up next was DJ Orgasmic and TTC. The French Canadians absolutely love these guys as they were singing along to their songs. The energy from the show was amazing.

Up next was Daniel Haksman and Edu K. Edu K was the lead singer of a pop punk band of what seems like My Chemical Romance or something like that. In 2000, he wrote a song dedicated to baile funk called Popuzuda Rock n Roll (ass Rock n Roll) and has been riding the wave of funk carioca since. The show was interesting. Here is a guy that is dressed in all black, black painted nails, spiked collar etc and I think he's singing about ass shaking and partying. Hmmm. To add to the flavor, he was definitely into the show, climbing on top of speakers (nearly knocking them over), climbing on tables and humping them etc. Interesting to say the least. He's on tour and will be in Baltimore this Friday at Taxlo along with TTC and MSTRKRFT.

We wake up the next day and walk up and down St. Laurent and all around downtown Montreal. Aux Vivres is a killer vegan restaurant. I tried poutine from a random spot. Moog/DNA now stocks Yeti Bounce. Vice Records party jumped off. Saw Flosstradamus, Kid Sister, Pandemonium Jones, Dave from Chromeo, A-Trak, Huggs, Cullen Stalin and a whole gang of other people there. Fast forward to Fractal again. Hatchmatik from Peer Pressure in Montreal is killing them with Bmore and more. A-Trak was up next and kept the party jumping with bmore and baile bangers. We left shortly after attempting to find the Slum Recs after party with Pandemonium Jones, Erik Devro, Huggs (he'll be at Sundays on the 22nd) and a couple other cats but no luck. Head back to go sleep and watch White Label TV. This is killer right here. I got an exclusive for this and this is just crazy. Crazy amounts of Spank Rock and some ill video remixes from System-D128 and more. Will keep you updated as soon as its out.

Sunday we went to a sports bar on St. Laurent to watch the Eagles game and found we were in friendly territory. Surrounded by Iggles fans, we cheered the Birds on as they beat the Cowboys. After the game, we headed home, passed through New Baltimore and got back to NYC early Monday morning.

I was back in Philly Monday night and have been recovering ever since. Back to the grind today and here on out.

Curtis Vodka at Walnut Room

DJ Deluxxx warmed up the spot with a wide range of music to get the crowd going. Although Curtis did not have his usual set up of CDJs, he was able to put in an excellent set using Deluxxx's Appletop and Serato ranging from old school Snoop to his usual mix of Baltimore club, including Shoulder Lean, and juke. The dance floor was crazy as the girls juked it about. Shout out to Purple Crush for her popping. Shout out to the over 40 group of about 10 people who were celebrating the birthday of one of their coworkers. Check out Curtis October 6th at Pop Montreal then on tour with Purple Crush in October and November. Check out the rest of the photos here.

Tonite in Philly and NYC

Philly: Welcome to Philly DJ Krush. Krush has been on top of his game for years now. He was here a couple years ago at Marathon Grill outside and my friend (I see you G.) still talks about how great it was. I somehow missed it and he actually went, thats definitely a surprise. Anyway,
DJ Krush truly represents international hip-hop. His real name is Hideaki Ishii, but Krush is just more fun to say. Krush was born in 1962 in Tokyo. After watching the movie "Wild Style" in the early 80s, he bought some turntables, learned to spin and became not only Japan's biggest hip-hop icon, but a world famous DJ, producer and recording artist.

He's kicking off his tour in support of his 8th album Stepping Stones. Its a best of album but in classical Krush style he has remixed all of the tracks.

A few of my favorites from the Lyricism disc:
Pick up both the double disc Soundscapes and Lyricism from Amazon.

New York: Welcome the arrival of Curtis Vodka for free at Sleeper at Thor in the Hotel on Rivington. The spot looks dope. Catchdubs will be there and the party goes til 4. Holler! Check him out in Philly Sept. 17th.
