This weekend marks the end of live music at the Khyber. A note was recently posted on their website that “There will be no shows at The Khyber in the month of August.” However, it appears that it is completely done and not simply taking a hiatus as some had hoped. DJ nights will continue at the venue upstairs. The City Paper catches up with some of those that helped ignite Philadelphia’s live music scene.

A loose-knit group of like-minded people…helped transform Philadelphia from a rock graveyard — a city that touring artists often skipped over on their way to New York or D.C. or freaking Bethlehem — into a place where acts of a certain size, disposition and ambition not only wanted to play but arguably had to.

The epicenter of this evolution was a bar in Old City called The Khyber Pass Pub and later, simply, The Khyber.

It’s a double dose of heavy bass this weekend with Subdivision last Fridays at Khyber and then the Double Dutch x Subdivision rager at the M Room with Ikonika.

Subdivision is every last Friday upstairs at The Khyber.  Residents Flufftronix and Lady Prowl bring in special guest Chicagoan Willy Joy (don’t boo him too much ).  No cover all night with $1 PBRs and $2 Kenzingers.

Ikonika released her debut album on label head Code9′s Hyperdub, most known for their release of Burial’s albums.  Natty Boh Peep from Subdivison in Pittsburgh joins local Subdivision and Double Dutch resident Lady Prowl, while Double Dutch ladies Gun$ Garcia & Jess Okay host.  All this madness is free before 11 and only $5 after.

Earlier this month XLR8R featured Ikonika just as she was ready to start out on her North American tour.

This Friday, Subdivision presents UK Funky phenom Roska direct from London alongside NY’s Kingdom.  Luvstep’s Flufftronix and Dirty South Joe open things up at the Khyber.  As of early this morning it had looked like the party would have been scaled back due to Roska having visa issues.  However, as of this afternoon Roska announced that he had sorted the issues out and would be on his way here.   Roska has been making waves for years in the UK and was recently profiled here in September.  Grab the Fact Mix we posted there and take a listen to this podcast he did for Disko404.

Subdivision resident DJ Rx got picked up by Nightshifters for their 14th release, blessing us all with Bumble a free EP. The Bumble EP features the title track and remixes from label head Donna Summer, Nate Day, Nifian and Tony Rocky Horror. Nightshifters describes the remixes as

DJ Donna Summer, delves into the deep end with some chill house organs over bubbly beats.  Fellow Subdivision pal Nate Day rips “Bumble” to her bones, adding a somewhat hip-hop vibe; while Seattle up-and-comer, Tony Rocky Horror, raves the fuck out of some wobbles. Nightshifters label head and NYC DJ Jubilee will be guesting tonight at Subdivision, now every last friday at the Khyber. Jubilee is a regular feature on here, download her XLR8R podcast mix we mentioned a few weeks back, the Flashing Lights Mixtape she did with Ayres and Catchdubs in January and watch her chart topping song, Smoke Rings, with Udachi. Finally, Philly gets its own Dre Day this Saturday at the Khyber.  This is the 7th year of Dre Day originally created by Burlesque of North America in Minneapolis.  The DJ’s for the night will be Ed Blammo, Ronnie Darko (from BBC, Amanda Blank Tour DJ), Jay Yo, No Arms and Shawn Ryan.  It’s $5 all night and the first 40 get a 40oz.  Break out your locs and Compton hats and 90′s west coast gear and win prizes.
