Switch, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Sega, Josh Wink

September 24th, 2007 · No Comments

switchlo-711498 Switch, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Sega, Josh Wink
Yo, fuck real life for real. I want to be lawnmower man during the day and then magically appear at night at whatever club night that is the best that night. Like this night, in fact this whole day. I have some real world ish to handle all this week and have no idea how much internets I am going to have access to. This means that I’m missing out on all of Wednesday and won’t be posting much. Wednesday would have been an all around awesome day. Early morning, I got the daytime grind on lock with some important interesting ish, get out at a mad decent time and then restaurant week reservations at Brasserie Perrier, for two, with a hopeful good look, course I’m not sure about that whole situation anymore. Then, nighttime jumpoff with Switchlo aka Lilo and Stitch aka Switch and Diplo which, if you were lucky, saw kill it pre tour at [Click] at Fluid. Not to mention rockstar (shorty we are rockstars) Blaqstarr and the “hipster premiere of DJ Sega”. Sega is the truth. By hipster premiere, they mean, have you been to Jamz on a Friday or Pinnacle on a Sunday? This is an all ages jump off, so I bet some of you have. I got to see the young bol DJ in an intimate setting last week (Happy bday DSJ and Jawntronix) and he absolutely killed while playing all of his own trax. I’m not salty in the least bit. Not at all…

joshwink-703322 Switch, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Sega, Josh Wink
And just to add insult to injury, Josh Wink celebrates 10 years of Ovum last Wednesdays at Fluid. If you’re more into “traditional” house as opposed to Baltimore house, then you need to be here. Two complete opposite ends of the spectrum. I don’t even want to write anymore about this or find that Wink music video where the boombox becomes a big star.
Wink guestlist which is free entry until 12.

Like I said, Not. Salty. At. All. In. The Least. Definitely didn’t want to crazy leg wit it to Blaqstarr or Wu Tang to Sega. Nope, not me.

Tonite: The Remedy 10 Year Anniversary

June 4th, 2007 · 1 Comment

l_277b6a6cad1afec3ead022872a3dcb68 Tonite: The Remedy 10 Year Anniversary

From Cosmo Baker:

Some words about The Remedy: It was over 10 years ago that, in a time when hip-hop was in a serious state of flux, when together with Rahnon and Rich we created The Remedy, “Dedicated to defying devisions in our musical climate.” The idea was a night which cured all that ails you of your hip-hop woes. And together, we created what I will humbly call the greatest hip-hop weekly event in the history of Philadelphia, if not of all time and al world. Where else could you find all types of people getting down to whatever Rich and I and whatever guest he had, all in unison, all on a Monday night - EVERY Monday night. There’s a reason why Rich always called it “Fluid University,” and that was because people went there to get schooled, but like one who thirsts for knowledge - it is sustenance. People would travel hundreds of miles each Monday night, join the Remedy Massive, and go back to New York or DC or Pittsburgh that night, only to have to go to work the next day. And they would do it week in and week out. Where else could you go and find Andre and Big Boi on the dancefloor, Lauryn Hill sitting at a table, Dave Navarro at the bar, DJ Cash Money on the turntables and Kurrupt on the mic, and it was like it was NOTHING? And this was on a normal night.

I feel so blessed to have been able to be a part of something that was that special, something that was so important, something that made such an impact. And I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to me to have actually played a part in it. The Remedy was what really made me the DJ that I am today, and I know Rich feels the same way. The Remedy influenced so many throughout the years, and it’s influence is still being felt today, a decade later. The way that things are so temporary these days, it’s an honor and a blessing to have been able to be involved with something that has had this much staying power. It is also truly one of the biggest honors of my life to have been able to be behind the decks alongside my friend Rich Medina, one of the best DJs one could imagine, as well as being a giant among men, and Rahnon, my dearest friend and closet confidant and really the glue that held it all together. So let’s do it again, one more time, like we used to… See you on tonight!

Free before 11, $5 after. Guest DJ’s and giveaways all night long. Fluid 613 S. 4th Street

Tales from Cosmo Baker

May 24th, 2007 · No Comments

cosmoandthekids_000-743698 Tales from Cosmo Baker(Cosmo and friends, South Philly 1979)

I’m thinking Cosmo Baker should write a book, the stories he has are incredible. Case in point:

“So I was downstairs the at The Latest Dish on a Sunday night and I got this call from Josh Wink and he says to me “Cos, Goldie has been on tour opening for Jane’s Addiction and they’re playing Philly tomorrow night. The show is over relatively early, but Goldie wants to play a nightclub afterwards. Can he come by The Remedy and get down?” I was thinking that it was kind of odd cause I pretty much spun hip-hop/funk/breaks and the crowd that would come out on Mondays would be kind of like “What the fuck” to D&B. Plus this was 1997 (I think, maybe 1998) and Jungle hadn’t really caught on yet. But I was like fuck it and told Josh to bring the dudes down. So the next day I just went to every record store in the city and put up little last minute poster and shit, and I called everyone I know to come down and check it out.

Goldie showed up a little later and the crowd had already been grooving to me just doing my thing, but there were A LOT of people in there early and I was like whoa. So then Goldie went on around 11:30 or so and started playing all the CRAZY fucking dubs, everything on acetate and just KILLING it. I grabbed the mic and I was really drunk and so I started MCing like a madman, and then I started beat boxing over Goldie playing his dubs and people fucking lost it.

Sounds crazy but this is all fact. But it gets crazier cause Perry Farrell was dancing up on one of the risers and people were like going off to him. I walked over to the bar and Dave Navarro was leaning agains the bar at Fluid, no shirt on, two girls on each side of him, and he was pouring tequila down his chest and girls were sucking it right off his chest. Later on I noticed Val Kilmer dancing in the middle of the floor, sunglasses on, no shirt on as well. He was dancing like in this weird motion, and was sipping out of this little flask. I later found out it was absinthe, that he ended up sharing with half the party.

Later on, after Goldie was done, I playes Cocoa Brothers “Won On Won” on 45 and somehow mixed it into Gary Numan “Cars” and the room exploded.

This explains why Fluid and Cosmo Baker are both incredible Philadelphians. See also the MF Doom story. Check out Cosmo Baker and the Remedy for a special 10 year anniversary on June 4th.

Tonite: Planet of the Drums: Platinum Reunion

May 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments

l_2e8307de8fa3027988e4d69e623e3184 Tonite: Planet of the Drums: Platinum ReunionIncredible. Planet of the Drums is back for a special Platinum reunion. Dieselboy’s Platinum night at Fluid (613 S. 4th) every Thursday was one of the premiere places to hear new drum n bass and jungle in the US. Every week a prominent producer or DJ would take the decks to a packed house. Resident DJ’s Sine and Icon held down warmup duties while Dieselboy was away touring the world. Relive just a little bit of the magic tonite with AK1200, Dara, Dieselboy and J Messinian along with Kaos, Sine, Sharpness and Illy.

So I dug in the crates and found some old school and new school sets from Dieselboy and Dara.

Here is a cassette rip of Killa Sound from 1995. Houstonbeats has the tracklist

I briefly mentioned Sutpen’s Jungle yesterday but it was the biggest jungle/dnb full party there was in the city, the East Coast and possibly all of the US. For years it was in a DIY warehouse called the Fake House in West Philly. In 2000, Substitution moved it to the Electric Factory. I used to have the flyer and might still somewhere. The lineup was incredible. Anyways here is a live set from Dieselboy

Last but not least is a newer set from Dslboy in January of 2007
