If you’ve been around for a hot minute you probably remember a mixtape called Favela on Blast — odds are it was the first time you ever heard that Miami bass x Rio de Janeiro equation that equals funk carioca aka baile funk. Well six years later, the DJ who put that together, none other than Diplo, who once studied filmmaking at Temple, co-directed and produced, along with Brazilian director Leandro HBL, a documentary. The film is like Favela on Blast on blast. 80 minutes of jaw-dropping footage, amazing beats, and heartfelt commentary from DJs, MCs, and funkeiros alike. It’s exactly the kind of in-depth view that funk desperately needed to be really understood by foreign audiences. As someone who has spent a lot of time at bailes in the favelas of Rio, I can definitely say it’s the closest you can get outside of the real thing. So it’s a rare treat to have it screening so close to home — International House as the launch of the Perspectivas film series, co-sponsored by Afrotaino Productions and Braziladelphia. Get your weekend started off right and come watch on Friday night. Copies of Flamin Hotz Records’ funk compilation CD will be on sale.
