From Cosmo Baker:

Some words about The Remedy: It was over 10 years ago that, in a time when hip-hop was in a serious state of flux, when together with Rahnon and Rich we created The Remedy, “Dedicated to defying devisions in our musical climate.” The idea was a night which cured all that ails you of your hip-hop woes. And together, we created what I will humbly call the greatest hip-hop weekly event in the history of Philadelphia, if not of all time and al world. Where else could you find all types of people getting down to whatever Rich and I and whatever guest he had, all in unison, all on a Monday night - EVERY Monday night. There’s a reason why Rich always called it “Fluid University,” and that was because people went there to get schooled, but like one who thirsts for knowledge - it is sustenance. People would travel hundreds of miles each Monday night, join the Remedy Massive, and go back to New York or DC or Pittsburgh that night, only to have to go to work the next day. And they would do it week in and week out. Where else could you go and find Andre and Big Boi on the dancefloor, Lauryn Hill sitting at a table, Dave Navarro at the bar, DJ Cash Money on the turntables and Kurrupt on the mic, and it was like it was NOTHING? And this was on a normal night.

I feel so blessed to have been able to be a part of something that was that special, something that was so important, something that made such an impact. And I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to me to have actually played a part in it. The Remedy was what really made me the DJ that I am today, and I know Rich feels the same way. The Remedy influenced so many throughout the years, and it’s influence is still being felt today, a decade later. The way that things are so temporary these days, it’s an honor and a blessing to have been able to be involved with something that has had this much staying power. It is also truly one of the biggest honors of my life to have been able to be behind the decks alongside my friend Rich Medina, one of the best DJs one could imagine, as well as being a giant among men, and Rahnon, my dearest friend and closet confidant and really the glue that held it all together. So let’s do it again, one more time, like we used to… See you on tonight!

Free before 11, $5 after. Guest DJ’s and giveaways all night long. Fluid 613 S. 4th Street

Tales from Cosmo Baker

cosmoandthekids_000-743698 Tales from Cosmo Baker(Cosmo and friends, South Philly 1979)

I’m thinking Cosmo Baker should write a book, the stories he has are incredible. Case in point:

“So I was downstairs the at The Latest Dish on a Sunday night and I got this call from Josh Wink and he says to me “Cos, Goldie has been on tour opening for Jane’s Addiction and they’re playing Philly tomorrow night. The show is over relatively early, but Goldie wants to play a nightclub afterwards. Can he come by The Remedy and get down?” I was thinking that it was kind of odd cause I pretty much spun hip-hop/funk/breaks and the crowd that would come out on Mondays would be kind of like “What the fuck” to D&B. Plus this was 1997 (I think, maybe 1998) and Jungle hadn’t really caught on yet. But I was like fuck it and told Josh to bring the dudes down. So the next day I just went to every record store in the city and put up little last minute poster and shit, and I called everyone I know to come down and check it out.

Goldie showed up a little later and the crowd had already been grooving to me just doing my thing, but there were A LOT of people in there early and I was like whoa. So then Goldie went on around 11:30 or so and started playing all the CRAZY fucking dubs, everything on acetate and just KILLING it. I grabbed the mic and I was really drunk and so I started MCing like a madman, and then I started beat boxing over Goldie playing his dubs and people fucking lost it.

Sounds crazy but this is all fact. But it gets crazier cause Perry Farrell was dancing up on one of the risers and people were like going off to him. I walked over to the bar and Dave Navarro was leaning agains the bar at Fluid, no shirt on, two girls on each side of him, and he was pouring tequila down his chest and girls were sucking it right off his chest. Later on I noticed Val Kilmer dancing in the middle of the floor, sunglasses on, no shirt on as well. He was dancing like in this weird motion, and was sipping out of this little flask. I later found out it was absinthe, that he ended up sharing with half the party.

Later on, after Goldie was done, I playes Cocoa Brothers “Won On Won” on 45 and somehow mixed it into Gary Numan “Cars” and the room exploded.

This explains why Fluid and Cosmo Baker are both incredible Philadelphians. See also the MF Doom story. Check out Cosmo Baker and the Remedy for a special 10 year anniversary on June 4th.

Mad Decent Podcast 12: James Brown

January 29th, 2007 · No Comments

james_brown-723654 Mad Decent Podcast 12: James BrownIt was definitely a sad day when I heard James Brown passed away. He was the hardest working man in show business and created some amazing music. The mix is brought to you by Cosmo baker and the words are from Diplo.

James brown died on christmas, and I couldn’t do any more podcasts til we did it about him.
cause james brown gave birth to this podcast and he gave birth to everything in modern music - nothing is the same after he was here and now he’s gone and I feel bad for people in heaven that have to rewind through his life cause it must be pretty damn nuts. This mix of JB songs and production credits is under 30 minutes and I thought I was listenin to it for 3 days before it ended.
Mix was done by cosmo baker.. he’s a true hero to me.

i used to go to fluid on monday nights to check cosmo at his party called remedy.. it was on fuckin monday nights and it was packed thick and cosmo would drop his signature style of hip hop and classics and wierd stuff no one would expect but would turn it out..
