If you’ve been around for a hot minute you probably remember a mixtape called Favela on Blast — odds are it was the first time you ever heard that Miami bass x Rio de Janeiro equation that equals funk carioca aka baile funk. Well six years later, the DJ who put that together, none other than Diplo, who once studied filmmaking at Temple, co-directed and produced, along with Brazilian director Leandro HBL, a documentary. The film is like Favela on Blast on blast. 80 minutes of jaw-dropping footage, amazing beats, and heartfelt commentary from DJs, MCs, and funkeiros alike. It’s exactly the kind of in-depth view that funk desperately needed to be really understood by foreign audiences. As someone who has spent a lot of time at bailes in the favelas of Rio, I can definitely say it’s the closest you can get outside of the real thing. So it’s a rare treat to have it screening so close to home — International House as the launch of the Perspectivas film series, co-sponsored by Afrotaino Productions and Braziladelphia. Get your weekend started off right and come watch on Friday night. Copies of Flamin Hotz Records’ funk compilation CD will be on sale.
Favela on Blast International House, 3701 Chestnut Street 7 pm, $5-$8
Thought this blog could use some more stuff about Brazil on it. Rember when 5151 was all on that Brazilian Jesus Juice tip! Good times. Oh also I think a bunhc of Pancadao do Morro: O Funk do Flamin Hotz, Ja E? just got sent to us so if you wanna a great cd of Brazilian Funky Bangers get in touch. Will sort you out!
Remember when Cabide was playing here in the States? He played at the Barbary and at the Mausoleum for the after party of the Diplo show? Yeah, the video above is what it looks like when he plays in and around Rio. Here he was playing in Cataguases.
Wanna see this pretty face live on stage Wednesday night? She’s MC Zuzuka Poderosa (that’s Zuzuka the Powerful to you), a Brooklyn/Brazil baile sensation, playing the Discoteca party at Fluid, 10 pm – 2 am, $5. And on the 1s&2s (and 3s&4s&5s, cuz y’know, MPCs got lots of buttons), it’s my man DJ Comrade of Xão Productions.
You might remember these names from by far omais legal show that Cabide DJ did during his fall tour here in the States. Here’s a brand new video of the proceedings to jog your memory.
Show brought to you by DJ Rahsaan of Afrotaino Productions who gets double credit for big upping Taíno culture (holla back pre-Columbian history) and preempting me on the best party coinage for the Illadelph. I swear I’ve wanted to throw a party called Braziladelphia since before I even moved here . . .
So last night at Metropolis with the Philadelphyinz, Morsy dropped this track. I’ve definitely heard this before, but finally tracked it down thanks to Skinny. Ok, so this is old, not sure how old but eons old in blog years. Actual years? Not so sure. This video showed up on Youtube June 19, 2006, tens of videos have showed up since. According to the MP3, its by Furacao 2000, which is just a sound system / label of multiple djs and performers. According to the song its by “The Double MP4″. Trying to track this down is a bit difficult as the only results are for file type mp4. My resident Brazilian expert (gwpow here and the fine writer of Beat Diaspora) has this to say, which isn’t very helpful so maybe this will stir him to find out more.
I think I remember this from high school . . . one of the goofy things we found on the Internet and circulated around the computer lab. I didn’t realize at the time it was Brazilian, nor do I recall the fondling/porno mags. Hmm. I guess I’m not being that helpful. It seems like intentionally ironic Sao Paulo rather than unintentionally ironic funk carioca IMO.
This could be true since those partially responsible for this video are the design duo Neon. Neon began as friends in college in Sao Paulo initially creating beachwear and now have branched out since their beginning roots in 2002. Be sure to check out their website, I’ve linked the section in English.
Is the song intentionally ironic? Or is it just the video? Judge for yourself in oneofthesevideos. Whats your take? Do you actually know more about this? Please leave it in the comments.

Last night on the Jersey Turnpike, coming back from a fast&furious Mudd Up! appearance (followed by some Brazilian eats in Newark’s Ironbound), Casi G and I played Cabide DJ some Philly and Bmore club. “Maneiro, maneiro,” (“cool, cool”) he kept saying. When we got back to Philly, Casi hooked him up with the T&A Bmore Breaks. He’s been playing around with them on his MPC all day in my basement, so we’ll see what he’s cooked up for tonight in Bawlmer.
Spankro’ presents the Jang House tonight with Cabide DJ live on the MPC and Catcall & Sleater Brockman from Australia. Resident DJ Si Young and friends warming things up.
