Turbostation III

New feature up on Turbostation on Philadelphia Weekly from Jack Schonewolf:

Turbostation are bringing that old feeling back with a monthly party at the Trocadero where the concert hall gets turned into a giant two-floor dance party with various Turbostationers positioned upstairs and downstairs. Bloodbath and the Strawberry Mansion DJs control the main room, spinning hip-hop- heavy sets designed for maximum dancing.

Upstairs, Shawn Ryan, Oh Murder! Inc. and the newest member of the crew, Diamond Girl, provide a room for electronic music fans. For the third edition this month, there’ll even be a rotating cast of DJs in the lobby, providing an eclectic soundtrack for those who want to hang out and not dance.

Check out Turbostation 3 at Trocadero, Friday Feb 29.

Smoking Ban Workaround?

¡Mirad! ¡Un pistacho fumador!
According to The Star Tribune in Minneapolis St. Paul, numerous bars have been holding "theater" nights allowing for a loophole whereby essentially all patrons are actors. The smoking ban has been in place since October.

Lisa Anderson, owner of Mike's Uptown bar in Hill City, said that last Saturday she staged a "theater night" and packed in four times the usual crowd that has come in since the smoking ban took effect.

Anderson said she has been helping other bar owners who want to put on their own tobacco productions.

"I'm going to continue to do this,'' she said. "It increased my business.''

So will Brian Bauman, owner of The Rock nightclub in Maplewood, which staged a theater night Tuesday and nearly doubled the usual crowd.

At least 10 other bar owners wandered through his bar that night, taking stock of the event's success.

It won't work for every bar or restaurant because some are carving out a niche with nonsmokers, he said.

I wonder if this would work in Philly? Honestly, I've kind of enjoyed the smoking ban. Especially for places like Medusa.

Cosmo Baker - Too Much Posse

Cosmo Baker has just released another incredible mixtape. This 2 hour plus mix is dedicated to the posse cut that used to appear on every rap album.
This was the record where the artist would invite some of his boys to drop verses on a song, and the end result usually ended up sounding like teh best rap party that ever. Sometimes it was a crazy combination of rappers that you would never think would even bless the same city, much less the mic. Sometimes it would end up being the jump start to a legendary career. Whatever it would be, the posse cut always brought the fire.

Here is a collection of some of my favorite posse cuts of all time. The initial list I had was much longer but in the end I had to trim it down. I had to make sure that (for the most part) the entire song played on this mix - I didn't want to leave anyone out. So here it is - let's go!

Throwback Jungle and Forward

Lets go way back into time with this one. Break out the glowsticks, PLUR, ROAR and all that. Remember Local 13 and their fruit parties, Evoloution, April Foolz, Skyline and the like. Have that fuzzy warm feeling? No idea what I'm talking about, it's all love.

First up tonight DJ Rap Reid Speed Annalyze is headlining 33Twenty with Swarm and Michael Myers. Its going to be ravealicious and I highly recommend you go to this. You should probably leave the glowsticks at home unless your bringing strings with them ;) Seriously though, Annalyze is a highly accomplished DJ and you should know about Swarm and Michael Myers.

As a bonus, I dug through my old collection and found a CD full of Myster Mason mixes from 99 - 01. Mason gave me this CD after dancing to A Side at the bar that is now Shouk like 5-6 years ago. Here is just a little treat. I'll keep peppering you with the mixes if you like them. Sorry no tracklisting.

Committee of Seventy: Volunteer on April 22nd

WOW, IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
Time to volunteer for the Primary Election!
We are looking for volunteers for a very exciting Primary Election, for the Presidency and especially for the State Senate and Representative races. By volunteering just a few hours of your time, you can help safeguard the integrity of the election and ensure that all eligible citizens can freely exercise their right to VOTE! Please see below for details about volunteer opportunities for the April 22, 2008 Primary Election.

Volunteer Opportunities on Election Day:

Citizen Field Volunteer:

Work on a team of 2-3 members (including one driver) and will be assigned to a specific geographic area in Philadelphia. The team travels between polling places, monitoring activity, answering voters' questions, helping to settle minor disputes and directing more complicated problems to the proper authorities.

Office Volunteer:

Work in Seventy's office, answering calls from voters, poll officials and Seventy Volunteers. Office Volunteers will be helping voters find their polling places, giving basic assistance with Election Day rules, directing problems to the correct authorities, and documenting problems that will be responded to by field teams.

Legal Volunteer:

This opportunity is for legal professionals and law students. Legal team volunteers will work on a team of 2-3 members (including one driver) and will be assigned to back up Citizen Teams in a specific geographic area (3 - 4 wards) in Philadelphia. In addition to traveling between polling places monitoring activity, and answering voters' questions, Legal Teams are assigned to more complicated problems that may require the assistance of a legal professional.

All volunteers are required to attend a one-hour training session prior to Election Day. At training, volunteers will receive necessary materials and information for their assignment. We will begin scheduling trainings during the second week of March. Trainings will be held at our Center City office, unless otherwise noted. If you have a group of 15 or more people, we can schedule a time and location convenient to you!

For more information on these volunteer opportunities, or to register go to www.seventy.org/volunteer. If you have any questions about these opportunities please call Nina Bloch at Committee of Seventy at (215) 557-3600, ext. 124 or e-mail at nbloch@seventy.org.

EDITOR: "The Committee of Seventy is a non-partisan organization conducting a permanent campaign to improve the Philadelphia region by demanding ethical conduct of public officials, promoting government efficiency, educating citizens and safeguarding elections." The post previously had a picture of Barack Obama which implied that 70 supported Obama, in fact this candidate is supported by the poster and not the Committee.
